Crenshaw: Nancy Pelosi's Takeover of Health Care "Wrong Approach" for America
November 6, 2009
WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Ander Crenshaw today (11/7) underscored that he will oppose Nancy Pelosi's government takeover of our health care system when it comes to a vote in the United States House of Representatives. He said the Democrats' version of health care reform is the wrong presecirption for America and pledged to back the Republican option to deliver lower health care costs without raising taxes.
“Americans’ health care is too important to risk on Nancy Pelosi’s 2,000-page gamble. Higher taxes, more national debt, and a government takeover of one-sixth of the nation’s economy are not what the doctor ordered,” said Crenshaw. “The message I’ve been hearing all along is: ‘Keep my health care costs down and give me access to care.’ The Republicans’ health care reform plan answers that call, and I back its fiscally-responsible provisions all the way.”
"I haven’t heard a demand for higher taxes, more national debt, less choice over their health care, and cuts to Medicare benefits. But, apparently, the Democrats have, because that’s the impact of their bill,” Crenshaw continued. “I’ve heard the opposite. This country needs lower health care costs and wider health insurance coverage without higher taxes, Medicare cuts, and more national debt. And, most importantly, Americans have told me – loud and clear – that they do not want the government in charge of their health care.”
A vote on the Democrats’ health care legislation is scheduled for Saturday, November 7. The Republicans’ are expected to offer their health care reform proposal during floor debate on health care on Saturday.
The Pelosi Health Care Bill would:
• Raise health insurance premiums for a family by $5,000 in 2016;
• Cost $1.3 trillion;
• Institute $729.5 billion in new taxes, particularly on small businesses;
• Fund abortions by requiring at least one insurance plan offered in a proposed health insurance exchange to cover abortions;
• Insure illegal immigrants by requiring applicants to verify their citizenship but not their identity. According to the Social Security Administration, more than 46 million Social Security Numbers have been issued to non-citizens;
• Increase sweeping new government controls, including the creation of a “Health Choices Commissioner” and a new insurance exchange where people earning up to about $96,000 for a family of four in 2016, could buy coverage at heavily subsidized rates.
The fiscally responsible Republican Health Care Proposal would:
• Cut health insurance premiums for small businesses, large businesses, individuals and families;
• Cost $61 billion or 5% of the $1.2 trillion Pelosi bill;
• Cut the deficit by $68 billion over ten years;
• Provide key reforms that would:
o Allow Americans to purchase health insurance across state lines;
o Allow small businesses to pool together to buy insurance;
o Allow private entities to follow the Safeway cost-cutting model of offering lower premiums for healthier lifestyles;
o Prevent runaway malpractice lawsuits: caps attorney fees and penalty rewards;
o Create Universal Access Programs for those who are uninsured because they have prohibitively expensive preexisting conditions, and
o Allow young adults to stay on their parents’ health plans until age 24.
