Today we honor our veterans – the brave men and women who have served our country past and present. Today and every day, may we never forget what our servicemen and women have and continue to sacrifice to protect our freedoms.

Below are veteran-focused highlights from last week, including my personal take on what Veterans Day means to me.

honoring world war II U.S. Army rangers

Last week, I introduced the United States Army Rangers Veterans Of World War II Congressional Gold Metal Act, which would collectively award the Congressional Gold Medal to U.S. Army Rangers veterans of the second World War in recognition of their service.

It was my privilege to introduce this legislation commemorating the unshakable dedication of our U.S. Army Rangers veterans who served our country so honorably during World War II. By enacting this bill, we are telling veterans that America will never forget.

houston companies recognized
for hiring veterans

Five Houston companies – ZamCo Directional Drilling LLC, MVP United, Adaptive Construction Solutions, Inc., Occidental Petroleum and Southeast Vocational Alliance – were recognized by the United States Department of Labor for their commitment to hiring veterans. Each company earned the Honoring Investments in Recruiting and Employing American Military Veterans (HIRE Vets) Medallion Program Demonstration award.

Congratulations to these companies on being recognized for their commitment to hiring veterans. Jobs like the opportunities created by these companies give veterans a new mission, team and purpose.
my take on veterans day

This Veterans Day, I wrote about what today means to me. Today I remember my time serving overseas, I remember the friends I've lost in combat and the memories I will carry with me for a lifetime. Every American views Veterans Day differently, but it's important to remember that this day should unite Americans as we all honor those who have fought and continue to fight for our freedom.

"Veterans Day. To some, it’s a day off from work. To some, it’s a time to remember their time serving.  To others, it’s a painful reminder of a loved one they’ve lost. It means something different for all of us. But maybe it shouldn’t.

"A year ago this weekend, I went on Saturday Night Live to remind Americans that we are far more similar than we are different. One thing that can, and should, all unite us is honoring our nation’s veterans. As I did last year, I challenge every American to say “never forget” to a veteran this Veterans Day instead of “thank you for your service.” Saying “never forget” shows veterans you’ve shared that experience with us. By saying “never forget,” you’re telling a veteran you appreciate everything they’ve done for our country and that you’re in it with them.

"This Veterans Day, let’s get back to the things that defined America for generations: love of country, patriotism, optimism, and a deep appreciation of our veterans of past and present.

"Never Forget."
