Congressman Crenshaw here. Congress – and the drama – is back in full swing this week following the holiday break. Below, I’ve highlighted some key takeaways about the complex situation with Iran. Additionally, I’ve included some exciting news about a $40 million dredging project in Houston that began this week as well as a reminder of the importance of raising awareness for human trafficking in honor of National Human Trafficking Awareness Day.

breaking down the situation with iran

Over the last two weeks, we've seen an extremely complicated situation play out with Iran. Here's what you need to know: History did not begin when President Trump rightfully took out Qassem Soleimani. Iran has a long history of escalating violence against the United States and it was high time our Commander in Chief took the necessary measures to deter such escalation. The world is a safer place without Soleimani and without Iranian escalation.

Additionally, this week I offered House Resolution (H. Res.) 783 as an alternative to Democrats' War Powers Resolution. We must make clear that the U.S. will not be attacked indefinitely. We will respond and it'll make you regret ever attacking us. We should stand by the decision to strike & stand by those who allowed us to bring Soleimani to justice. Congress should be commending our men and women who made this possible instead of wrongly suggesting to them that their actions were wrong.

Below are some of my key takeaways from the situation as well as my offering of H. Res. 783 on the House floor:

flood mitigation progress for houston

This week marked the beginning of a $40 million dredging project to remove the remainder of the Kingwood mouth bar. This project, which is funded through the City of Houston, state grant dollars and Harris County’s voter-approved bond, will remove silt and sediment from the San Jacinto River. The dredging will help decrease risk of flooding in the area during future storms.

While Hurricane Harvey devastated our community, it also taught us a lesson: we must do more to improve flood infrastructure and mitigation in Houston. This dredging project is one of the many things myself, the Houston delegation, and state and local officials have accomplished to ensure that what happened during Harvey doesn’t happen again.

National human trafficking awareness day

Human trafficking is a serious problem throughout the U.S., so much so that I brought in experts from around the country to my Human Trafficking Symposium this past October to raise awareness and discuss solutions to this heinous crime in Houston and the country.

Saturday was National Human Trafficking Awareness Day, which serves as a reminder of the importance of raising awareness. Through education, we can empower Americans with the knowledge to help stop this crime once and for all, which is why I hosted the symposium.
