Crenshaw Statement On Release Of Federal Flood Mitigation Funds
HOUSTON, TX – The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced the release of $4.3 billion in flood mitigation funding. The money, which was appropriated in Congress in 2018, will enable Texas to better prepare for future storms by funding flood mitigation projects throughout the area.
The release of these funds has been Congressman Crenshaw’s number one priority. In the first eight months of his term, Crenshaw wrote multiple letters, cosponsored bipartisan legislation, and was in frequent contact with HUD in order to make this happen.
Crenshaw released the following statement in response to the announcement:
“One word comes to mind: finally. Almost exactly two years ago, Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Texas, destroying our homes and communities and shaking our spirit. But true to form, Houstonians demonstrated why we have a reputation for grit and resilience by volunteering our time, donating our money and even voting to raise our own taxes.
“It’s been two long years of recovery and we still have a long way to go. These funds are integral to upgrading Houston’s infrastructure to ensure a weather event like Harvey will never again so badly damage our community. I’m grateful for the efforts of local partners, like Harris County Flood Control District, as well as federal partners in the Texas delegation who also made this a top priority. I look forward to working with Commissioner Bush and the GLO as they now start developing a state action plan for how these funds will be dispersed.”
